"The Money Ocean"

Okay, it is time for something new, and that something new is...well, I guess the title gives it away.  Foiled again!  It would be hard to keep secret, really.  This is one of those famous old-school Rota stories, along with "Night of the Saracen," "From Egg to Duck," and the never-published-in-English "Paperino Pendolare" (notice how I implied that my fan translation of "From Egg to Duck" somehow constitutes a "publication."  You can't stop me!).  But this one is currently Rota's top-rated story on inducks, at fifty-nine, and I'll go along with that.  Why haven't I covered it before?  It is a mystery.

"Nightmare on Webfoot Walk"

Well, hello, boils and ghouls. What frightful little creatures of the night you are. I'd better give you a treat, then, hadn't I? Old Man GeoX has something very special for you tonight. Something...spine-chilling. OoOoOoOo!!!

"The Hada House"

Okay, so I've been shamefully negligent here of late: blame it partially on me having to adjust to new and frequently difficult circumstances, and partially to a rather disastrous computer meltdown (though I DID manage to save the files for my ongoing translation, to your undoubted relief). NEVERTHELESS, if you thought I was going to let a great holiday like Halloween get by me—HA! HA, I say!

"From Egg to Duck" Re-ducks

So when I wrote about this well-known Marco Rota story, I wrote, among many other things:

I briefly considered editing the English dialogue into the panels, until I remembered that I suck at editing images and it would have taken fucking forever.

Hmm.  Well, that was three years ago, I still had my scans, and I sorta thought, notwithstanding its sizable flaws, this is a historically important story, and it ought to be in English.  It was a quick project, so you can download the results right here.  In that previous entry, I made a script available; I used a lot of that for the translation, with a number of awkward bits smoothed out or edited down for space ('cause I really didn't have much of a notion of what would fit in a single panel).

"The Golden Throne Legend"

Hey folks; sorry about the recent radio silence on this end.  I've had various non-Disney-related things to attend to (shocking, I know).  I do have some interesting stuff planned for the near-ish future, including those last two Gottfredson entries (though at this point, we seem to be ramming head-on into the fourth volume's release).  But right now, it is necessary to say one thing:

"Night of the Saracen"

I have praised this Marco Rota story in the past. When I went back and reread it, however, I realized...well, I'm forced to admit, it's not exactly a great story. Or is it? Comics consist of both words and pictures, so how much importance do you place on each of these elements? Because if you heavily favor the art side of the equation, it probably is a great story--indeed, it features a climax that may well be the most visually stunning thing in duckdom.  But if we privilege the writing…well, the premise certainly would have lent itself to greatness, but the execution is somewhat lacking.  Details? Okay.

"From Egg to Duck"

UPDATE, 02/17/14: Forget the below script; I made an unofficial English version of the story, which you can download here.  Read a bit about it here.

And now, a Duck Comics Revue exclusive: an in-depth look at what must--if only by process of elimination--be the most famous duck story never to be released in English, anywhere, Marco Rota's memoir (of sorts) of Donald, first published in 1984 to celebrate the character's fiftieth birthday. Told you I'd have something interesting for you. I'm quite excited about it. It took a hell of a lot of work, and it's going to be by far the longest entry I've ever written. So kick back, relax, and enjoy.
