Ten Years of Duck Comics Revue

-->

I know I haven't been posting much lately. You know how it goes. Also, it "goes" especially right now, what with me having recently gotten a teaching job in China, and been rather stressed out lately about this that and the other. Still, I did not let this anniversary go by unremarked, notwithstanding the fact that, as I've noted more than once, I actually started writing about ducks on my regular blog somewhat before I started this one (I believe this post is where it all started--it's sort of surprising to me that it took me less than a month to decided to devote a whole blog to it), but...still. Here we are. That's a dang long time. And, I mean, I'm not planning on giving it up, even if I'm becoming a bit more sporadic. It's still fun to write about anthropomorphic waterfowl now and again.

So we're going to do something a little bit special on this anniversary: I may regret this, but here it is: I'll write about whatever stories the first five commenters tell me about. Can't guarantee a timeframe, but I'll do my best. And if you choose something super-obscure that I can't call to hand, I will laugh at you (but whom am I kidding, you're all just going to choose Barks and Rosa. Prove me wrong!). Void where prohibited; prohibited where void.

(Here's hoping this is not an April's Fools joke… If not, happy anniversary indeed, and thank you for this opportunity!)

Being a merciful Lord, I shall grant thee a choice: either whichever DuckTales 2017 you like best, or whichever Sarah Jolley comic you like best (except the really short/wordless ones, of course).

I think I will go for Cimino's "il piffero variabile," the one about overthrowing an autocratic leader with music and laughter. Can't imagine why that one speaks to me right now! But it's one I'd like to hear your comments on, complete with political philosophy.

Now you've got me fantasizing about what stories *I* would blog about, if I would ever do such a thing. First, the stories where a female character gets to go on a Scrooge adventure, fulfilling my childhood fantasies. Bananas (Grandma Duck), Himalayan Hideout (Daisy), A Heart-Sized Ruby (Daisy again), l'ultimo scrigno (Paperetta/Dickie). Then, a Korhonen series! Sons of the Moon, And Then There Were Two, Another One for the Album, Case of the Hungry Thief (and the whole Grandma Duck Detective series), Like a Bad Penny, Which Is Witch?, Mr. Gearloose Leaves Town, Globetrotters, Beam Me Up, Mr. Fargone....

I'm glad Achille Talon asked for a Sarah Jolley story (I'm thinking it's fairly unlikely you'll choose to do a DT '17 story instead). It would be fun to have a place to discuss her great fancomics.

How about “Uncle Scrooge’s Money Rocket” by Luciano Bottaro? Or “Me, Myself and Why?” by Carpi (which is in “The King of the Golden River” volume of the Disney Masters books).

In retrospect, I wish I’d said either Donald Quest or Duck Avenger: New Adventures, you know, for something completely different.

If Mickey stories don't count, than do Money Rocket or Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold Again. The sequel that was run at Boom!

...Or how about your old, long-ago, pre-IDW review of "The Perfect Calm", side-by-side with my version form 2015! That'll be something unique!

Yeah, I know I'm being "me-centric", but, by now don't we all miss it? ...Evan a tad? ...A drop? ...A molecule?

"Since Debbie posted twice, does that make me number 5?" - well Joe, Geox did said first five "commenters", not "first five comments" ;)

Heh--if you do "DD Finds Pirate Gold Again," you could also cover the French version published in Canada, which was clearly a translation of Joe's dialogue! That's fun to see. Maybe I could scan it for you, if I can remember how to save scans from my printer.

April 1, 2019 at 10:43 AM
Anonymous Elaine said...

On the Disney Masters stories: Joe has told me that it's very difficult for him to scan from those hardcover volumes without damaging the binding, which is why he hasn't covered more of those on his blog. But maybe there's some way to get scans from other printings of those stories, which you could then supplement by quoting the English dialogue?

It seems that I'm one too late to suggest a story, but I will offer my congratulations on a great ten years of Duck blogging! Here's to ten more!
(also, it occurs to me that you may not know where to find Achille's suggestion of Sarah Jolley stories, so here's the link: (http://thepropertyofhate.com/DoodleComics/))

I would have mentioned, if I were not posting via my phone at the time, that the reason I ask for Casty's story that I called "Night of the Living Text" is that it happens to be my all time favorite, of any story I worked on! ...I really gave that one everything I had!

But, I'll be pleased with any of my submitted choices. Can't wait!

Wow! I can't belive it's ten Years already! So many fond memories...

"Comicbook crocks" review, "A little something special" review (I belive that one got more then one comment) New DuckTales review, "Astro Pooch", "Ducky Date", "Prisoner of wite Agony" and many, many, MANY more! Great jokes, analises, rants, your mortal rivaly with Joe Torciva's blog that makes me think of "Second richest Duck in the world".... and, many, many, many good times!!!

Keep on posting GeoX! Your The man!

“Mortal rivalry”, Pan?

Oh, no! I prefer to think of us as STAR TREK and LOST IN SPACE… two great, but different, ways of doing the same thing! And always something to like about either one!

I'll work things out. Who knows? I may go over the stated five stories. It's a party! Several notes, though: first, if I'm going to do a story that's never been released in English, I need either a rain check or someone to provide me with scans, as, while *I think* I have the Mickey Parade with "il piffero variabile" (wouldn't swear to it, but the cover looks familiar), I certainly don't have it with me in China. Similar caveat regarding stories published in Disney Masters books. Unfortunately, I'm not one of the cool people and therefore am unfamiliar with Sarah Jolley's work. Someone want to link to an archive, or something, of her Disney stuff?

April 1, 2019 at 6:39 PM
Blogger Debbie Anne said...

I certainly wouldn’t want to deprive someone else of a spot, so I certainly hope that Joe Torcivia’s response counts as #5. We could count both of my posts as one post. Of course we didn’t make it easy, did we, many of us suggesting multiple stories? And none of them by Barks or Rosa, either!

April 1, 2019 at 6:50 PM
Anonymous Elaine said...

Looks like George Greg already provided the Sarah Jolley link. You must read Sarah Jolley's comics, for your own amusement, if not for the sake of the blog! They are terrific!

I happen to know you have the Mickey Parade with the piffero story in it, because I sent it to you! I wouldn't have suggested it so confidently otherwise. Of course, I was aware that you probably don't have that with you in China. I figured we might have to wait till you get home for you to cover that story. I have it in its seventh Italian printing, 2014's Topostorie Disney 5: Ritorno a scuola, but even if I were to scan that, it would be in Italian.

April 1, 2019 at 7:42 PM
Anonymous Elaine said...

BUT...if you like, I will withdraw "piffero" for reasons of temporary unavailability, and substitute... something DUTCH. Which has been printed in English. Kruse's "Trapped in Castle Rollingstein" or Geradts' "Last Voyage of Ringtail Van Dukke," both drawn by Ben Verhagen. Or the Kruse/Bas Heymans "Shiver Me Timbers!" What Dutch stories have you reviewed? Other than the Sinterklaas version of Barks's rocket-roasted turkey? Perhaps this is an appropriate New Horizon for Decade Two.

I'm going to write about the following things, though it's not clear in what order:

A Sarah Jolley thing
"Il piffero variabile"
"Mickey's Inferno"
One of the stories in the recent DM Bottaro book
"Night of the Living Text"
"Ringtail Van Dukke"
"Monarch of Medioka"

It will be good to get back into duck writing.

Oh, Geox covered PLENTY of Mickey storeis, including a lot of Floyd gottfredson, some Romano Scarpa's classcis and some random Paul Murry stuff or things like the Italian "A very Goofy King Midas" or Super Goof story :)

Just check his Index and dive into some Geoxy goodness :)

"Mickey's Inferno" is one of my favorites, mostly because who would believe that such a thing would exist? I actually have two versions of it, the Gemstone version in Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #666 (which is also hard to believe it exists), and the Papercutz version in hardcover. Both have different translations.

Interesting. I haven't seen the Papercutz version. How does it compare?

And my goodness yes, I've written about SO MANY mouse stories!

Blogger Pan Miluś said...

I don't know the "Walt Disney Comics and Stories #666" version but I do have the hardcover one and it pretty good in my opinion. Once a while there is a rhyme that feels tad "off" from what I recall.

April 3, 2019 at 7:53 PM
Anonymous Elaine said...

See, this just shows that I'm really not emotionally invested in the Mouseverse. I've read all GeoX's reviews, and I still don't remember that there were Mouse stories, when there were tons! So embarrassing. But the Mouse just doesn't stick in my mind, what can I say. He comes, he does stuff which is sometimes fun, he goes, he leaves no trace.

It might be worth waiting to review Mickey's Inferno until you can get hold of a copy of the Papercutz translation, for comparison's sake. I'm confused about how much of the story was printed in WDC 666. 37 pages vs. 69, but it's four-tier rather than three-tier, I think.... Inducks says "one scene removed" which makes it sound like most of the story is there. About the Papercutz version, Inducks says "censored and partly remounted."

Replacing all the references to hell, sin and devils would make Mickey’s Inferno pretty pointless.

REALLY looking forward to your review of "Night of the Living Text". :) It's been one of my favorite Casty Mickey stories ever since I read it in the Norwegian-language digest Donald Pocket #416 -- and I now also own it in a beautiful hardcover edition as part of Walt Disney’s Comics and Stories Vault, Vol. 1. :)

I can’t wait to see “Night of the Living Text” as well… and I translated and dialogued the thing for IDW!

For what it’s worth, it is my single favorite of every Disney comic book story I worked on! Casty tapped into something REALLY SPECIAL connecting with sci-fi, horror, and comic book enthusiasts (…of which I am definitely ALL THREE) with this story… and I gave it MY ALL to try and do justice to this wonderful story.
